About the Scholarship

At Zion Lutheran Church, we are dedicated to lifting up our young people and their gifts in all ways, including support for their musical abilities. The Yvonne S. Falkenstine Vocal Scholarship was created in 2006 by an act of the Church Council to honor the 50th anniversary of Mrs. Falkenstine's service as soprano soloist at Zion Church.

Eligibility Requirements

1Must be between the ages of 12 and 20 years old.
2Must be a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
3Must be currently studying singing with a reputable and qualified voice teacher.
4No applicant may receive this scholarship more than two times.

Application Process

Step 1: Submit Application

Complete and submit the application form below by October 1st.

Step 2: Recording (First-Time Applicants Only)

If this is your first time applying, you must submit a recording of three songs along with your application. Email your recording to info@zionyork.org. Returning applicants do not need to submit a new recording.

Step 3: Live Audition

If your recording is deemed satisfactory, you will be scheduled for a live audition before a committee consisting of one of Zion's pastors, one music director, and one lay person.

Step 4: Notification

If awarded, you will be notified within one week of your audition.

Audition Requirements

Perform three songs of your choice
You must provide your own accompanist
Pre-recorded accompaniment is permitted (bring your own playback device)
No amplification (microphone) is permitted at the audition

Important Dates

Application Deadline: October 1st
Auditions: Scheduled after application review
Award Distributed: Early in the following year

Performance Requirements

If awarded the scholarship, you must perform at Zion Lutheran Church:

Perform at least two songs during worship
Must perform at all four regularly-scheduled worship services at Zion
Coordinate performance dates with the church office

Also Applying for JEMS?

Applicants may also apply for the Jeanette Everhart Music Scholarship (JEMS) in the same year. The two scholarships have different requirements and criteria.

About the Award

The Yvonne S. Falkenstine Vocal Scholarship is awarded annually to recognize and support young vocalists in the Zion family who demonstrate dedication to their vocal studies.

The scholarship may not be awarded every year if there is no qualified applicant
Recipients are selected through an audition process
No individual may receive this scholarship more than twice
