JEMS - Supporting young musicians at Zion

About the Scholarship

At Zion Lutheran Church, we are dedicated to lifting up our children in all ways. The Music and Worship Committee sponsors deserving elementary, junior high, and senior high children by awarding them the Jeanette Everhart Music Scholarship (JEMS). The JEMSs are awarded to children who have shown outstanding aptitude in music.

Eligibility Criteria

  • 1The applicant must have been in music lessons for a minimum of two years including the current year. Applicant must be currently taking private music lessons.
  • 2The applicant must agree to perform in worship services at least three times throughout the year. Performance dates and times will be selected by the applicant and approved by the Contemporary Music Director.
  • 3The applicant must be a member of Zion Lutheran Church and attend church on a regular basis.
  • 4The applicant must submit a completed application including an essay about a Bible verse related to music.

Important Dates

  • Application Due: First Sunday in October
  • Recipients Announced: October worship services
  • Performances Complete By: First weekend in May
  • Funds Distributed: Music Weekend (May/June)

Performance Requirements

To receive your scholarship, you must perform three times at Zion Lutheran Church:

  • Any Saturday evening or Sunday morning service
  • Must be at three different service times
  • May perform alone or in a group
  • Easter weekend is excluded

Important Note

It is your responsibility to inform the Contemporary Music Director two weeks prior to your scheduled performance with the confirmed date, the name of the piece, and the composer.

About the Funding

The initial funding for the Jeanette Everhart JEMS program was made available by a generous gift presented to Zion Lutheran Church by Mrs. Kathryn Rohrbaugh in the name of Jeanette Everhart.

  • Awards are not based on family's financial situation
  • Open to deserving children under the age of 20 in the Zion family
  • Awarded based on application, essay, and involvement in private lessons
  • Must be reapplied for each year
